Overdose deaths are soaring, and supporting people who use drugs while they are still using can reduce that number.

Harm reduction addresses the reality that people use drugs and that many drug-related deaths could be prevented if tools were available to mitigate the factors that lead to such deaths. Change at Your Own Pace enabled access to resources and helped steer people who use drugs to those resources. It marked the first time that a state public health department, Michigan, had advocated for harm reduction as a public health intervention. Removing stigma and criminalization saved lives by providing services that support the health of people who use drugs while they are using.
If I had had some of this while I was using, I could have saved myself some injuries.”

People who use drugs need care, not criminalization.

The campaign emphasized the importance of harm reduction services and the need to reimagine our approach to drug use and overdose so that it is centered around health, community and support rather than shame and stigma.
