Alcohol is a risk factor for six of the ten leading causes of death in Mexico, contributing to gender violence, road crashes and deadly diseases.
Alcohol taxes can reduce alcohol harms and generate revenue for health services.
Launched in September 2025 by El Poder del Consumidor and RESET Alcohol, “Who Pays for the Damages?” ran for two months on digital media and buses across Mexico City, showcasing how the alcohol industry profits while people pay the price. Materials depicted harms including gender violence, road crashes and deadly diseases, and called for health taxes on alcohol products. The timing aligned with an advocacy push for the inclusion of alcohol taxes in the 2026 national budget proposal.
